The Danish Girl

Aloha amigos,

The danish girl here is actually a movie which have been banned in Malaysia, and I have to agree on that. For the influence of the movie and the impact it made are inappropriate for Malaysia cultures and belief.  But, I watched it to fill the gap of curiosity within me of what really is happening in the society.

In this era, LGBT is no longer something unfamiliar especially since the United State approved the law that the LGBT community may have equal marriage rights . I believe as someone who is interested in medicine, these community will also be my potential patients and someone I will encounter in the future. And it is important to be liberal and accept those who already co-exist with us.

Briefly , this movie is about a man who discovered that he was actually a female soul living in a male body. He undergo sex change surgery to become a real woman.

The main character in this movie are Einar Wegener/Lily Elbe portrayed by Eddie Redmayne. I say he played that role extremely well, I am convinced that he really wanted to become a woman! The transition of the role was really smooth, as an audience I can feel that Einar Wegener are beginning to disappear slowly and Lily had also rise to dominantly take over the body and mind.

The struggle that Einar had as a husband is real. He loves his wife but at the same time he was also confuse with himself. He knows that Einar is not his true self, it’s Lily. And the more he tried to contain Lily, the more unhappy he become. So he decided to embrace who he really should be. As Einar learn everything about woman from his own wife and from all other women, Lily’s character started to bloom and grow. Soon , Lily is dominant completely and that is when she decided to undergo the surgery.

Despite , Einar/Lily was the main attraction here, my favorite character would be his loving wife named Gerda Wegener. Gerda was played by Alicia Vikander and she was the one who brings me tear and emotions. Through her, I could feel her love towards his husband Einar. And because of her love for him, she is being loyal all the way through. She knows how important Lily is so she supported him with every decision. At first, she really hoped she could bring Einar back to life. They went for many doctors to get help, but it seems like Lily was very determined. She choose to trust with Einar decision to become Lily and helped him with everything.

One of the saddest moment to me is when she come home, it would be her husband greeting her. But one day, she came home and it’s Lily. The next day, it stills Lily. And it goes on every day. She had her own troubles as well and she really need the warmth hug and words from her husband , but Einar was forever gone. She misses her husband very much but still choose to take care of Lily.

Although this movie was told as based on true story , the movies aren’t really as accurate to the real novel.

So if you are someone who likes originality and open to new ideas, this will be a recommended movie for you. Make sure to add this into your Must Watch list!

Thank you.
